“If we could speak to the dead, what would we ask them? If the dead could speak to us, what would they say?”
The Houdini Exposure takes the audience to spotless private hospitals and silent operating theatres, flapping circus tents and cavernous music halls, exploring the possibilities between what science tells us to accept and what faith invites us to believe…

Inspired by the popularity of Victorian Spiritualism and modern day celebrity mediums, The Houdini Exposure addresses the question of whether or not it is possible to make contact with the spirits of the dead.
The production explores subjective interpretations of mediumship and psychic phenomena through two parallel storylines, featuring Little Earthquake’s trademark combination of factual research with elements of pure fiction. Without attempting to offer definitive conclusions, the play examines a range of psychological and physiological factors which influence the perspectives of two historical and two contemporary characters.
The historical strand looks at the life and career of the famous illusionist Harry Houdini and his wife, Bess, focusing primarily on their chequered relationship with Spiritualism. As newlyweds desperate to break into showbusiness, Harry and Bess work as fake mediums in travelling circuses across America. After the death of his mother just before the outbreak of World War I, Harry is inundated with messages from mediums offering to help him make contact with her spirit. Harry’s disappointment, grief and guilt subsequently send him on an obsessive campaign to investigate the claims of Spiritualist mediums through the early years of the twentieth century.
The contemporary strand follows Matthew, a professional psychic, as he undergoes treatment for a malignant brain tumour under the supervision of Rachel, a neurologist. Rachel looks at the world through scientific eyes. She has no time for ghosts or the voices of the dead. But as strange white shapes start to appear on Matthew’s brain scans, they must both re-assess their own opinion of what is really happening inside his head.
Who will you believe? The medium? Or the magician?
Little Earthquake is developing the production with the support of Brain Tumour (UK); neuro-oncologist Professor John Darling at the University of Wolverhampton, neuro-psychologist Professor Glyn Humphreys at the University of Oxford; clinical psychologist Dr. Leanne Nicholls; and spiritualist medium Amanda Honey.
The original research, development and 2009 preview performances of The Houdini Exposure were produced in conjunction with the Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton and funded by The National Lottery through Arts Council England.
